70 Types of Architectural Styles

  An Architecture Style refers to method of construction and form of building, which is identified in terms of design and history. An Architectural style is developed within a country and keeps changing depending on technology, religion, beliefs, materials available, fashion and requirement.

We would like to share 70 Known Architectural styles which helped in developing the architecture style in which we are living today.

1. Prehistoric Architecture Style

The early civilizations which were scattered around the globe, used to make buildings out of available wood in the forests and local rocks.

2. Neolithic Architecture style - 10000 to 2000 BC

Neolithic Architecture was one step ahead than home for shelter, during this time tombs, religious buildings were built. Building materials used were mud bricks, textiles, wattle and daub, Stone and timber.

3. Mesopotamia Architecture style - 4500 to 2000 BC

Mesopotamia was along Tigris - Euphrates river having distinct cultures. Some of building style like courtyard house, Ziggurats and stepped pyramids were built as part of temple complexes

4. Egyptian Architecture style - 900 BC to 300 AD

During this period, buildings were constructed with hardened mud bricks and limestone, since there was scarcity of wood. Buildings were aligned astronomically and built by slaves.

5. Greek Architecture style - 900 BC to 300 AD

Greek Architecture is best known for temples, developing civic order and religious ideals. It has 3 defined orders: Corinthian, Doric and Ionic

6. Roman Architecture style - 300BC to 700 AD

Roman Architecture developed some of the very important structural and building elements such as Domes, Vaulted ceilings and arches where was built by using concrete. Civil engineering projects such as Bridges, aqueducts and roads were also seen at this age. Roman architecture was renowned for Temples, Amphitheaters, Palaces, Villa, Circus and Baths.

7. Byzantine Architectural style - 3330 AD to 1453

During this period, Building was in geometric complexity, the classical orders were used more freely, and in other words we can say it was a continuation of Roman architecture but with some influences.

8. Moorish Architectural style - 711 to 1492

Moorish architecture include Horseshoe arches, voussoirs, domes, lancet arches, crenellated arches, muqarnas, ogeearches, courtyards and decorative tile work known as Zellij. It was also called as articulated Islamic architecture of North Africa and parts of Spain and Portugal.

9. Hoysala Architectural style - 1000 to 1300

Hoysala Architecture flourish in rule of Hoysala, known as Karnataka these days, a state of India. Extensive carving work and but was seen around and in nature was carved in stone and in building.

10. Romanesque Architectural style - 1050 to 1170

It is an Architecture style of Medieval Europe having some key features like Semi - circular arches and pointed arches during this time.
