Vastu Shastra Principles
by SCBA

Many factors in life of a human being are govern by his fate, karma and Vastu of the place where he/she lives and work.

Apart from karma of a person, fate and Vastu affects life's quality.

It is important to follow Vastu Shastra guidelines while constructing a house, shop or any other place as it changes a man's destiny for betterment.

Science behind Vastu Shastra

We have observed how car is or a plane is designed, it has front part lower than rear part to overcome the wind resistance when in speed. Similarly, our earth is moving around sun in its own axis with a tilt of 23.5 degree from west to east, if our building is lower on east and higher on west, only than it will be able to withstand the resistance of wind easily and get filled with positive energy from North - East leading to peace and prosperity of the inmates. To understand Vastu all one needs is a little knowledge about Astronomy to reap its benefit.

Principles behind Vastu Shastra

As we all know that Sun is the most important celestial body which radiates light and heat and is the reason for existence of life on earth; that’s why Sun is known as the “Soul of Universe” in ancient Indian texts.
The principles of Vastu Shastra allow humans to use limitless energy of Sun in best possible way.
The earth, which is our planetary home, is like a mother and is a treasure-house for all comforts and happiness which a human cannot find anywhere else.

Sun Effect

Sunlight has two spectra

1) Visible Spectrum:  It consists of 7 main colors called VIBGYOR which stand for Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. These colors have deep psychological effect on person's mood and should be used sensibly to create positive environment.

2) Invisible Spectrum : It consists of Ultra violet rays which are shorter in length, invisible, they kill bacteria and aid in the synthesis of Vitamin D in our bodies and secondly Infra-red rays which have longer wave length and cause for the heat of the sunlight

Importance of Sun

Sun illuminates the Earth and it sustains life. There are 3 reasons why sun is considered as life giving ORB

1) Sustain life on earth by process called Photosynthesis. All living things gets oxygen and animals get food from the plants.

2) Illuminates the Earth and is the reason we are able to see. When the sunlight falls on a coloured object, it reflects the light of the object's colour into our eyes while all other colours are absorbed into that object, giving us the perception of the colour.

3) Sunlight is Beneficial to human being in following ways
  • Weight loss by water retention
  • Good for liver as it detoxify the liver, doctor recommend exposing jaundiced new born baby to morning sunlight
  • Increase endurance and muscle tone
  • Good for healing
  • Kills germs by UV rays
  • Increases alertness by boosting serotonin levels which help a body to stay alert
  • Normalize blood sugar
  • Positive effect on cholesterol
  • Lowers Blood pressure
  • Endorphins increment in our blood creates feeling of wellbeing in us and reduces the incidence of depressive conditions.
  • Good for immune system

Since Sun is proven very important and essential to human being in day to day life, Vastu Shastra takes consideration of Sunlight for designing of the buildings from place to place, sunrise to sunset and from season to season in the design of buildings

Some broad ideas I am sharing with you, which we will discuss in detail in my coming up blogs.

1) Water Source and wells: The water source is preferred on east and north sides so that the UV rays can kill germs and purify the water.

2) Kitchen: The kitchen platform on eastern side so that morning sunrays can destroy germs and prevent food from spoiling moreover the person who is cooking the food is also exposed to the useful morning sunlight.

3) Windows: Wall should be thicker on south and west side to reduce heat and there should be more windows on north and east side to allow constant sunlight

4) Toilet and storerooms: These lesser used rooms should be placed in west side, as it tends to get hot and these rooms act as buffers to the house to get heated up. Since these rooms are getting heat, so these rooms are always free from moisture germs and fungus and all dried up.

5) Obstacles : These should be no obstacles, high compound wall or tall tree on north and east side of building.

6) Balconies, Terraces and Open space: All these desirable should be north and east to have morning sunlight.

7) Trees: It is advisable to have tall trees in south and west direction as it protect house from direct sunlight and give pure oxygenated air to inmates.

Earth Magnetic Field also taken in Vastu Shastra with scientific Explanation some of the examples I am sharing.

One should never sleep with head in the North

The Scientific Explanation –"Since the Earth’s magnetic North pole (situated near the geographic South) is stronger and has a positive effect on humans, especially on their brains, one should always try to sleep or sit with the head in  the South. Also, because the magnetic South pole (located near the Earth’s geographic North) has a negative effect, we must avoid sleeping with our heads in the North. "

When sitting at the dining table or in the living room, one should sit facing East, North or West but avoid sitting facing South.

The Scientific Reasoning –"When you sit facing South,  your head is effectively in the North and your feet in the South. So, this causes the negative effect described above."

In the Puja room avoid idols facing north because then the worshipper has to face South which is not advisable.

The Scientific Reason –"When a worshiper sits facing South, his feet are towards the South and his head is in the North. This causes the negative effect explained above."

Earth Energy or Cosmic energy effect

In Vastu, the movement of cosmic energy also called ‘prana’ through a 4-sided building is believed to be similar to the flow of energy across the Earth. It flows in a definite direction – from the North-East direction towards the South-East and North-West corners before heading to the South-West. Keeping this flow in mind, Vastu Shastra prescribes an ideal plan called the “Vastu Purusha Mandala” to ensure that the ‘prana’ or ‘cosmic energy’ moves smoothly through a building and around it.

There are invisible energy lines which run in all four directions and generate effects on human body at the cellular level and control the organs of human body. Since the structure is placed above the earth it tends to break this electromagnetic field, in order to maintain equilibrium we need to design the structure in proper manner so that this energy flows harmoniously.

Vastu Shastra is based on various natural energies which are there in atmosphere.
  • Cosmic energy
  • Wind energy
  • Light energy
  • Magnetic energy
  • Thermal energy
  • Electric energy
  • Earth energy
  • Solar Energy
  • Sky energy

Utilization of these energies gives us pleasure, peace, prosperity and money in life
